Autumn at Frédéric-Back Park

In the past, Frédéric-Back Park was a former limestone quarry that became a waste landfill. Since 1995, the city of Montreal transformed this place into a park. When the work is completed, the park will occupy 153 of the 192 hectares of the Saint-Michel Environmental Complex.

Beneath thousands of tons of excavated soil, sand, gravel, on-site composted leaves and wood chips collected during the City's tree-trimming projects, 40 million tons of waste continue to decompose, producing biogas and a liquid called leachate.

The white spheres are used to cover biogas collection wells. The methane contained in biogas is one of the main causes of climate change. Underground, more than 200 collection wells, connected by a 17-kilometer network, pump biogas to a power plant where it is used to produce electricity. The unique design of the spheres won the 2018 Grand Prix du design, in the Urban Furniture category.

This park is my favorite place in my neighborhood. Like other joggers, walkers and cyclists, I regularly look behind the barriers at the transforming spaces, looking forward to being able to go for a walk there.
